Friends of Port Clinton Cemeteries seeking contributions

$

0

The Friends of the Port Clinton Cemeteries are undertaking a major fundraising campaign to pave the cemetery roads. This project called the Cemetery Friends Paving Project (CFPP) is contracting with Erie Paving of Sandusky, Ohio. The estimate from the company has come in at $75,000 for the Riverview Cemetery portion of the project. Due to the cost of this project, the paving will be completed in increments over a period of time. The city of Port Clinton has given complete approval for this project, but has made it clear that there are no monies available from the municipality. However, the city will complete the necessary infrastructure and groundwork as a means to help keep down the cost. This project is needed to eliminate the muddy driveways that visitors encounter during funerals and when visiting their loved ones in the cemetery. Paving the driveways will increase the accessibility and aesthetics of the cemetery.

The Friends of the Cemetery is a non-profit organization started in 2008. A number of smaller projects in the Riverview and Lakeview Cemeteries have been completed since the organization's inception. Since this paving project is a much larger project, the Friends of the Cemetery are applying for grants as well as seeking donations of any size to put towards this work. Anyone wishing to contribute may do so by either contacting Dana Alvarez at 419-967-0495 or mailing a donation directly to Mary Mills at 912 Lee Avenue in Port Clinton.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) recently selected Jeff Tyson as the Lake Erie fish management program administrator. Tyson has worked in ODNR Division of Wildlife fish management for nearly 20 years. He previously served as the Sandusky Fisheries Research Unit fisheries biology supervisor.

“Jeff brings a wealth of Lake Erie fisheries management experience to his new position,” said Rich Carter, ODNR Division of Wildlife executive administrator of fish management and research. “Jeff is a talented biologist with great interpersonal skills that will allow him to effectively communicate about Lake Erie fish management.”

Tyson replaced Roger Knight, who retired in 2012. Tyson will lead the Sandusky and Fairport Harbor research stations on Lake Erie fisheries research.

Tyson was hired by the ODNR Division of Wildlife in 1994 as a biologist for the Sandusky Fisheries Research Unit. He was promoted to fisheries biology supervisor at the same office in 2003. He was also a hatchery technician in Missouri prior to moving to Ohio.

Tyson lives in Marblehead. Originally from Missouri, Tyson received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fisheries from the University of Missouri.

Did you hear about popular local singer Ron Howard? Ronnie is the lead singer in the band Cruisin’ and does other performance gigs as well. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, his auto caught fire and he lost everything, I mean everything. He lost the car, which also had all of his sound equipment inside of it. Then he found out his wife forgot to update their insurance premium and voila!!! … no insurance! Well, the good folks at Cleats on the way to Marblehead are holding a benefit for Ronnie on Sunday, April 7 from 1-5 p.m. Tickets are $25 for a special buffet meal and are available at Cleats, Minuteman Press and at The Beacon. That afternoon you can hear Cruisin’, Colin Dussault, Smooth Groove and more. Definitely worth the price of admission.

We were saddened to learn of the deaths of a couple of very lovely ladies in our community this week. First, Helen Grummel passed away last week. She was a school teacher for life, and I got to know her quite well back in the 1970s when her son-in-law, Denny Kersten, coached the Oak Harbor Wrestling team, starting the dynasty that we know today. She and her husband bought Gem Beach Marina about that time, which is still owned and operated by the Grummel family, Helen’s son Jack and his wife Ginger. Megan (Jack and Ginger’s daughter) Lovett also works there with her husband Steve. Also, the infamous lady who was a fixture at local Happy Hours, Miss Pat, passed away over the weekend. She was just a wisp of a lady, but always had a hug for me. I know this much, she enjoyed her life right up to the end.

Our Find Wylie winner for this week is Mark Miesler of Port Clinton. He was one of 114 entries who found our friendly fish hiding in the ad for Baumann’s Auto Center on page 8B in last week’s Beacon. Mark wins our weekly $20 gift card from Friendship Food Stores. We’ll be hiding Wylie again this week. If you find him, drop off an entry form at our office in the Beacon Place Business Center or click on the Find Wylie Icon at our website,  www.thebeacon.net.

The Port Clinton Easter Egg Hunt will be held this Saturday, March 30, starting at 10 a.m. on the Courthouse lawn. All youngsters ages 12 months to 10 years are invited to this event sponsored by the Port Clinton Parks and Recreation Department and Champions for Children. For more information, contact Jenn Porter at City Hall at 419-734-5522, Extension 8.

I received a lovely note last week from Mary Monak, a regular contributor for The Beacon, with her dedicated publicity for the Marblehead VFW Post. She said she thought of me during a prayer session recently. I could always use a few extra prayers out there. Anyway, she told me the story of her husband Dan who still holds State records for longest return of a pass interception against Port Clinton almost 60 years ago. The game was one-sided with PC holding a 41-0 lead and driving for a score when they arrived on the 8 yard line and attempted a pass into the end zone. Dan picked it off three yards deep and headed the other way, scoring the Stonecrushers’ only TD of the day. Dan’s 103 yard interception return still ranks in the top 10 in Ohio High School football history. The story made my day. I love it when I learn something I didn’t know before.

We have recently updated and upgraded our website, www.thebeacon.net. In the past few weeks, we have worked closely with our webmaster Paul Wallen, our editor Donna Lueke and our graphic design staff to make it a priority to keep our website current, not just once a week, but every day. Every day we are sent or informed about breaking news. Some of it is big news, some of it isn’t. However, it is all local news about local people, places and events. There is no longer a need to wait for your newspaper to arrive in your driveway. You can get local news updates and fresh photos every day, 24/7 on www.thebeacon.net. Check us out. We hope you will be pleasantly surprised.

As you all know, this is Easter Weekend, the most holy of holidays in the Christian world, celebrating the resurrection of a man named Jesus, who was put to death by crucifixion, and rose three days later to prove to the world that he was, in fact, the Son of God. It is also the feast of Passover celebrated in the Jewish world which goes all the way back to the days of Moses in Egypt before he led his people out of slavery. Let us all take the time to worship this weekend. It’s not just about the Easter bunny and Easter eggs. It’s about something more important than that.

ICS gets new principal for a day

Mr. Benjamin Cadigan reported for duty on Wednesday, March 20, wide-eyed and ready to take charge.  Ben was “Principal for a Day” at Immaculate Conception School.  The third grader took the place of I.C.S. Principal Connie Snyder for just one day. Ben wasted no time at all making a few small changes to the normal school day at I.C.S. First and foremost, everyone was permitted to give the school uniform a rest for the day and wear their jeans to school. Secondly, in the morning all of the classes had time in the gym to do an obstacle course designed by Ben, to play board games and popular playground games. Recess was fifteen minutes longer on Wednesday as well. Ben also helped, with Mrs. Snyder’s guidance, with many office tasks.

When asked how his day went, Ben replied “Awesome! I want to do this every day”.  Being Principal for a Day was auctioned off at last year’s Immaculate Conception School auction.  This year’s auction is April 20 and the theme is “Kentucky Derby…a Run for the Roses”.  Tickets are available at the school office at 109 W. 4th Street or by calling 419.734.3315.

PC Fireworks

Yes, I will grant you the fact that with the Easter Bunny scouting out places to hide eggs it does seems a bit strange to be reading a letter that is addressing a holiday that occurs in the middle of the summer.  However, planning for the annual Port Clinton Area 4th of July Celebration is a year-round activity.  Raising the necessary funds to implement the events associated with this annual celebration of our nation’s birth is the primary purpose of those plans and for that matter this letter.

As in the past, the organizing committee is anticipating an overall budget of $8000-$10,000 to fund the 2013 4th of July Celebration.  All funds are being held in a 501C3 account with the Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

To date, carry-over funds from 2012 activities, as well as contributions from the 2013 Port Clinton City Budget and other fund raising activities total just over forty two hundred dollars ($4200.)  Well shy of our ultimate goal!

We are deeply committed to not only continuing our local annual celebration but improving on activities of the previous years.  That is why we are asking the citizens of greater Port Clinton, both fulltime and seasonal, to help us with our fund raising goal.

Financial contributions may be made to the:

Port Clinton Chamber of Commerce Foundation
110 Madison Street
Port Clinton, OH 43452

A note in the memo section of the check ‘FIREWORKS’ will insure the funds are directed to the proper account.

At minimum we must let the fireworks company know our intensions no later than May 1st, 2013.  Unfortunately, our current bank account falls far short of the $8000 needed for the July 4th display.

Please contact me with any questions you may have:

Coordinator of the Ottawa County Project Lifesaver Carolyne Gilchrist and B-C-S Superintendent Guy Parmigian.

At its March 19th meeting, the Benton-Carroll-Salem Board of Education highlighted the efforts of Mrs. Carolyne Gilchrist, Coordinator of Ottawa County Project Lifesaver.  Gilchrist explained that Project Lifesaver is a non-profit enterprise that provides transmitter wristbands for both children and adults who are at risk of becoming missing or wandering due to a disability, or disease like Alzheimer’s. The wristbands emit an automatic radio signal every second, and that signal can be tracked over several miles. Project Lifesaver has been able to help locate missing children and adults in minutes rather than days. Almost 50% of the missing and wandering will perish if they are not located within 24 hours. Ottawa County Project Lifesaver is sponsored by the Port Clinton Lions Club, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, other agencies, and by generous donations. Gilchrist asked those who want more information on this program that can save lives to call 419 898-0400, extension 3133.
