Bids for the reconstruction of Sixth Street from Harrison Street to Fulton Street in Port Clinton will be opened Thursday, April 4th.  The project includes reconstruction of the road base with the proper under drains provided, some additional catch basins for storm water collection, new pavement at a width of thirty-four feet, new curbs with the replacement of some of the existing sidewalks. All driveway approaches will be reconstructed using concrete. A new waterline is also being installed as part of the project.

The construction will occur this summer and plans call for its completion by November. Contractors will be submitting bids on two options. One option is to construct one lane while retaining east bound traffic in the other lane. The second option is a two phase approach. The street will be initially closed from Fulton Street to just west of Jefferson Street and that portion will be completely reconstructed. The balance of the project will then be reconstructed from Jefferson Street to Harrison Street. The lower cost option will likely be used.

The Small City Program of ODOT will provide 80% of the eligible construction costs while the City is responsible for the remaining 20% local share. The local share must be provided from a non-federal funding source. The estimated total cost of the project as bid is slightly more than $2,000,000. ODOT will provide $1,471,000.

St. John Lutheran in Rocky Ridge Celebrates 125 Years

Quasquicentennial – it's not a word that rolls easily off anyone's tongue, but it is an appropriate description of the upcoming celebration at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Rocky Ridge. The church is located about four miles west of Oak Harbor. On Sunday, April 7, the church will celebrate its 125th year, the quasquicentennial of its birth in 1888. On April 8th of that year, the St. John parish first known by the German name “Evangelische – Lutherische St, Johannes Gemeinde” was organized by twenty-four charter members under the leadership of the Reverend Samuel Kusthardt.

On November 5, 1888, a frame building constructed using material and labor largely donated by its members was dedicated. Just over two months after the dedication, fire completely destroyed the building. However, the members were not discouraged, as even with their humble means they began the construction of a brick building that very spring. In October of that year, less than twelve months after the dedication of the original church, the new brick building was dedicated. This structure served as the church's home until it moved into its present sanctuary less than a mile away in 1967.

German services were held every Sunday until 1933, when they began to be held only once per month; they were eliminated completely in the early 1940's. The church was initially a member of the Iowa Synod, but voted to remain independent when the Iowa, Ohio and Buffalo Synods merged. It joined the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in 1946 as part of its Michigan District and remained so until 1988, when it became part of the Northwestern Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The ELCA was created by the merger of the ALC and the Lutheran Church in America (LCA). Synod Bishop Marcus Lohrmann will be officiating at the April 7th services.

The church began its celebration in January with a chili cook-off sponsored by its youth group, and entertained the Oak Harbor High School Mixed Choir in February. Other events planned as part of this year's festivities are a picnic following worship services with afternoon activities planned for children and adults on June 30th and the finale on October 13th, at which time former pastors and confirmation class alumni will be invited to reminisce with the congregation. Pastor Ralph Schibler is currently serving the church as its interim pastor.

As it celebrates, the church remembers those who showed the way and overcame challenges, yet faithfully shared their love for Christ. The church's current mission statement, “Celebrating Christ, Serving Others”, serves as a lamp to its future but also captures the driving force of its past.

The Tin Goose flies again

Island Airlines and the 1929 Ford Tri-Motor “Tin Goose” are flying once again out of  Keller Field /Erie Ottawa County Airport to provide air service to Lake Erie’s Western Islands as it did between 1933 and 1985.

Members of the Tri-Motor Heritage Foundation recently climbed into the Flight Simulators at the Liberty Aviation Museum and experienced a virtual flight of the famous airlines tradition route to the islands.  Some of the members who actually flew the original planes on a few occasions marveled at the 360 degree high tech simulation.

Between now and April 7th the Flight Simulators will be on hand to allow visitors a chance to fly the Tin Goose, a P-51 Mustang and others as time permits.

For more information contact the museum at (419) 732-0234, or visit www.libertyaviationmuseum.org.

The Ohio Elite All Star teams have won three national titles over a year’s time. In April 2012, the Senior CoEd Level Three cheer team won their division at the US Finals National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. Teams from around the country came to Indianapolis to compete for the national title, and the Ohio Elite Senior CoEd team took the crown.

On March 2, 2013, Ohio Elite traveled to Columbus for the Arnold Sports Festival to compete in US Spirit’s Cheer and Dance National Championships. Ohio Elite’s Junior Level Two team, the Sergeants, placed first, earning the national title and the Senior CoEd Level Three team, the Commanders, also placed first, earning an additional national title. On top of this the Commanders won Grand Champion in their division, meaning that the team had the highest score over all other level three teams at the event. It has been an extremely successful season for the entire Ohio Elite program, which consists of teams ranging in age from four to eighteen. Up next, the teams will travel to Indianapolis to defend their crown in the U.S. Finals on April 13st. Following that, the Commanders will travel to New Orleans to compete for another national title. Ohio Elite All Stars Sergeants and Commanders consist of 38 members from area school districts including Lake, Northwood, Oregon, Genoa, Oak Harbor, Perrysburg, Cardinal Stritch, Toledo and Springfield.

Michele Upton of Bellevue lights her candle as her fellow inductees look on.

Twenty-eight Terra State Community College students were inducted into membership by the Alpha Mu Epsilon chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a national two-year college honor society, during a ceremony March 21.

Michael Shirtz, Dean of Business and Creative Arts, was the keynote speaker. He told the students about a traffic accident that changed the course of his life but never extinguished his passion. He gave them an assignment – to nurture their own personal PTK, and always keep their fire going.

“The candle that you light tonight is not just a ritual of this ceremony. It represents something much greater,” he said. “That candle represents the flame inside of you. A spark that ignited a flame that drives you today. It’s a representation of who you are. That one small flame at the end of that wick is only the beginning of a great light that will only serve as your beacon from now, and through all you do.”

Local students inducted into PTK included Theresa Elder of Oak Harbor and Christine Minney of Port Clinton.

Phi Theta Kappa recognizes and encourages scholarship among associate degree students who are invited to membership on the basis of scholarly achievement, leadership, citizenship, character and faculty recommendation.

To be eligible for membership, a student must have a minimum grade point average of 3.50 and have at least 12 hours of course work completed.

Nina Schyllander, Associate Professor in Mathematics at Terra, serves as the chapter’s advisor while Michelle White, Assistant Professor in Mathematics, serves as a co-advisor.

Ottawa County Commissioners Steve Arndt and Jodi Regal congratulate 2012 Employee of the Year, Paul Harrison of Maintenance

On Thursday March 7, the multipurpose room of Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus was filled with staff and their family members for a special night of recognition and celebration. Everyone enjoyed a pig roast with a variety of salads, desserts, and pulled pork.

The evening began with a presentation that featured facility-wide honors Riverview achieved in 2012. These honors included the highest admission rate in six years. A total of 290 residents/patients were admitted in 2012 and 212 of those admissions (72%) returned back to the community. The facility also celebrated its Medicare 5 star rating, which it has maintained since January 2010. The facility has been named on the US News and World Report’s listing of “Best Nursing Homes” for 2011, 2012, and 2013, and also achieved a deficiency free state survey. Riverview was able to keep a close eye on their budget and secured a $17,476 surplus for the year.

Riverview recognized Shalynn Hatmaker (dietary), Jennifer MacDonald (STNA), Holly Milleson (LPN), Kelly Weirich (dietary), and Chris Woods (laundry) for Perfect Attendance for the entire year of 2012. Not only did these dedicated employees make it to their jobs each day, but also were never tardy and never left prior to the end of their scheduled shift.

The facility also honored the longevity of many of its staff members for their years of service. 5 Years of Service: Jane Wolf (Director of Food and Nutrition), Nancy Ish (STNA), Ben Eldred (LPN), Becky Rahm (STNA), Sarah Williams (STNA), Jessica Crawford (Housekeeping/Laundry), Lee Schultz (STNA), Karen Brubaker (STNA), and Shalynn Hatmaker (Dietary). 10 Years of Service: Maria Dolley (STNA), Jackie Griffin (LPN), and Todd Schunk (LPN). 15 Years of Service: Sharon Johnson (RN), Lisa Dobbelare (RN Restorative), and Cedele Emch (RN). 25 years of Service: Teresa Lazenby (STNA). Lisa Barrett, Director of Activities, was presented with a special token of appreciation, an embroidered Riverview blanket in appreciation of 30 years of service. Anne Powell (LPN) was also recognized for 30 years of service. Anne retired in November 2012.

Employees receiving Employee of the Month for 2012 were also celebrated: Cara Densic (Case Manager), Suzanne Witte (LPN), Trisha Stevenson (LPN), Deb Hepp (STNA), Katie Perry (Dietary), Tracey Schiller (Housekeeping), Patsy DeLeon (STNA), Margie Zunk (STNA), Connie Webert (Dietary), Paul Harrison (Maintenance), Jessica Crawford (Housekeeping/Laundry), and Tina Marinis (Nursing Administrative Assistant).

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of the 2012 Employee of the Year. The staff of Riverview votes for the winner of this honor from the 12 staff having received Employee of the Month over the year. Riverview was proud to announce Paul Harrison (Maintenance) as the Ottawa County Riverview Healthcare Campus 2012 Employee of the Year!

Paul was born in Germany while his father was stationed there in the United States Air Force. Other than Germany, he has lived in Bettsville almost his entire life. Paul has three sons, ages 21, 18, and 16.

Paul has been employed at Riverview since July 2011. For him, the most satisfying aspect of working at Riverview is helping the residents. He believes the staff members are an extension of their family, and in some cases all they have. “It’s very rewarding to me to help them make their days easier and happier. Even if it’s a simple good morning or a handshake after fixing something for them, it puts a smile on their face,” Paul stated.

When Paul is not at work helping the residents, he is usually lending a hand to someone with a home project or involved in his sons’ sporting events. When he does get free time, Paul likes to go camping, boating, taking his sons hunting, and golf with family and friends. “Golf is my stress reliever,” he stated, “it’s fun to just take the boys out and have some bonding time.” Paul can also be found cheering on his favorite sports teams; the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Pittsburgh Steelers, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Employee of the Year honor is accompanied by a front row parking spot for an entire year and an employee of the year lapel pin. A prize basket with donations from local individuals and businesses was also awarded to Paul. The basket included a $20 Community Markets gift card from the Riverview Auxiliary, a $25 gift card to Wal-Mart from Robin Pfeiffer, a FinePix T410 digital camera and 8GB memory card from Mobilex, a dozen Cookie Lady cookies from Home Instead Senior Care, a $50 Visa gift card from Ottawa County Commissioner Jim Sass and his wife Molly, 100 vendor bucks from Northwood Vending, 2 round trips on the Jet Express to Put-In-Bay from the German family, a one year subscription to the Ottawa County Exponent, and a reusable tote bag, teal insulated lunch bag, travel mug with straw, Mercy LifeStar navy t-shirt, Mercy LifeStar notebook and pen, and a $10 McDonald’s gift certificate from Mercy LifeStar Ambulance Inc.

In 2012, the Danbury Lakers baseball team had a 12- 12 record, 5-7 in the TAAC.

The Lakers lost six seniors to graduation, John Bunce, Branden Burke, Dalton Chapman, Caleb Helline, Lucas Kennedy and Cory Schenk. This group left their mark on the program, being the class with the greatest numbers of wins (49) over their high school careers.

The top returning lettermen for the Lakers are senior pitcher Zach Kalinoski, a 3-year letterman, and pitcher/shortstop sophomore letterman Chase Botson. Promising underclassmen are sophomores Mike Stys, catcher/pitcher; Alec Calton, 1st/pitcher; Jack Tyson, 2nd/pitcher; and freshman Austin Buchanan, shortstop/pitcher.

The Lakers 2013 squad is young but energetic. “The 2013 team’s strengths include coach-ability & team camaraderie,” according to coach Adam Steinbrick. “The Lakers need to learn in a hurry and most of all show continuous improvement throughout the year.”

The projected starting line-up could include as many as six sophomores and a freshman. Ottawa Hills and Northwood will be favorites in conference play once again.

In addition to head coach Adam Steinbrick, the Lakers coaching staff includes Bryan Dudash, Jeff Corbin and Mike Limberios.
